Why do people expect Hispanics (that are here legally) to abandon their heritage to live in the US?

We didn’t expect that of any other immigrants. Take a walk in NYC. Visit Chinatown. Does it look “American” to you? Go see Little Italy. How “American” is that? Walk through the Jewish community or the Irish section. You will hear Chinese spoken, Italian, Hebrew. You will see their homes & shops decorated & adorned as they were in their homelands. Why then do we expect the Hispanics to completely abandon their language, their heritage and their culture and in a sense, deny their homeland, to come live here?

I think the fact that Hispanics are becomming a majority scares people. They don’t mind the smaller groups of people because they’re fewer in number. There’s plenty of legal hispanics, and they’re eager to help their family become legal as well.
In the past someone had complained about Dual Citizenship because it wasn’t patriotic to America. I think these people need to get a clue that America is just a country with people from everywhere. There is no true “American” look or culture and they need to accept that. America was founded on people from different countries with different customs and languages, and thats what it continues being.
yeah but they don’t take down the American flag and put mexicos above it and fly the American flag upside down underneath it either!!! thats what a group of hispanics did at a school in California.
Yes, but all those others ALSO speak English. I don’t expect or ask them to abandon their heritage. I just ask them to have the decency to learn my language if they are going to reap the benefits of living in my country. Is that too much to ask?
I even try to learn Spanish because I think we all should know more than one language. It makes us better. But why are we seen as the bad guys because we want them to learn to speak English?
the big difference is that they put the USA first, and dont burn the flag, and did it legally

When I go to Brazil, I speak portuguese…not english…if I was to move to Germany dont you think they would expect me to learn German?? Vice versa would be the same…

I totally agree. My German born Great Grandfather never abandoned his native language even during WWII. Of course he was scared to be sent to the camps out west, but he never forgot where he came from, nor did he let us forget. Even though he was against Hitler and the whole Nazi thing he didn’t change the food he ate or the language he spoke at home and in the community. And as for the Hispanic community, I’m White and American born and raised and I speak Spanish everyday at work and home. (BF is from Honduras.) My daughter taught her class how to count in Spanish and she’s 4. I work for an Immigration Law Firm and I thoroughly enjoy using my gift of speaking 2 languages, because these people just want to legalize to give their families a better life. I try to think of myself as their tool to fix their status and make that happen, to tell their stories and let them be heard through the language barrier.
First of all it was their choice to immigrate to our country, no one begged them to sneak in here. No one is asking them to abandon their language or culture, we do expect them to at least learn our language and become citizens and most important obey our laws and that starts with coming here legally !
These people come here illegally and demand that we, as a country learn their language because they’re either too lazy or stupid to realize, that if they and their children expect to be successful, they’d damn well better learn the language of this country or any other country they squat in.
It’s plain and simply common sense.
If only those legally here and their children were here it wouldn’t have near the impact it has, particularly with gangs. LEGAL immigrants have a lower incidence of crime than do our native population, likely because they have been screened. Illegal immigrants diverge in the other direction.
